Random Ramblings :: Out Front ...

Hi there everyone 😀

We have the tiniest bit of front garden ... mainly concrete with just a narrow strip of border either side of the front door, with a privet hedge on one side and tall conifers on the other.

I don't really have a good picture of the front of the house but you can kind of get the idea of the size of the garden from this photo.

We have this lovely old brick wall at our boundary with the footpath and then you can just see the front of the house in the top right of the photograph ... so it is really tiny.

Whilst it only really needs a good seeing to three or four times a year ... we always end up putting it off. For such a tiny bit of garden it does create a fair amount of effort ... and green waste.

With not really going out anywhere we have kind of stopped noticing how overgrown everything had got but it was definitely time to give it some love and attention, so a session 'out front' was on the cards for one day last week.

This session involved the shearing of the privet, which was getting very shaggy ...

I must admit I try and leave it as long as I can ... in the hope that I can get away with just doing it twice over the course of the year. It is now back to its 'Hovis loaf' shape and should last until the autumn ....

The borders always look lovely in the spring ... starting off with snowdrops and primula, followed by forget me knots, miniature daffodils and bluebells.

By the time the foxgloves and the campanula burst into bloom the rest is all starting to look a little bit tatty ... so today was time to clear the old daff and bluebell leaves and the forget me knots ...

We also have a few pots out front ... two bays, two box balls, two lavatera and two skimmia. Again they don’t take a lot of looking after but it was time to have a good tidy up and give the box their annual trim ...
It all now looks a lot tidier, but a bit bare ... but there is still crocosmia and the roses to come, the geranium and the daisies will grow back and the campanula and foxgloves have a fair bit of life left in them yet ...

So that was the first side done, now to pretty much repeat on the opposite side ... but with no hedge, the conifers definitely only get an annual trim and that is pretty much the last job of the year ...

Whilst it is quite pretty it's not really that inspiring and it is a job that is on 'the list' for some real attention at some point ... not any time soon though.

Meanwhile out back was looking far more inspiring ...

... and that is where we spent the rest of the afternoon ... under the shade of the magnolia and the big umbrella ...

... just contemplating the next few days ...
