Exploring East Devon #1 :: Budleigh Salterton

Hi there everyone 😀

Finally ... Welcome to the first of my East Devon holiday posts. It seems such a long time since I've had proper holiday posts to share with you ... I am beyond excited ... I have lots to share and I'm sure they will keep me going for a good few weeks.

We spent the first full day of our fortnight enjoying the sunshine and just generally hanging around The Old Piggery ...

There was some batch cooking to fill the freezer for later in our break ...

... and we had our first try of yoga for fatties (definitely no photos of that). It was a lovely chilled out day to gently break us into our holiday.

On Sunday we decided to head to Budleigh Salterton for the day. It had definitely looked worthy of a visit on our earlier recce. I mean Budleigh Salterton ... it just sounds like it would be nice doesn't it?

It was another glorious day and we parked up on the beachside car park, which was very busy. We managed to find a nice spot on the edge of the car park, backing up against the grass. The plan was for us to complete our Geocaching mission, which would take us along the front and into town and then back again, when it would be time for a picnic out the back of the car. We are so rock and roll 😂😂😂

There was plenty to look at on our walk along the front ... the beach was huge, spreading out in either direction ...

It was all pebbles though, no sand for toes to be scrunched in, so we stuck to the footpath ...
There were plenty of pretty beach huts ...

... red cliffs ...

... boats ...

... and an unusual prayer cairn made of pebbles from the beach ...

We found scenes very reminiscent of our visit to the Suffolk coast a number of years ago ... with plenty more boats and the accompanying paraphenalia ...

We came away from the front to have a look at the Hight Street. It's a really pretty village with lots of pretty cottages ...

... and the most gorgeous thatched building housing the museum ...

We took an intriguing looking ginnell back to the sea ...
... for more seafaring paraphernalia ...

... and beach huts ...
All watched over by one of the locals ...
We couldn’t resist a sit in the sun ...

... with our first ice creams of the holiday ...
Looking over a heart made of pebbles on the beach ...

We started to head back along the High Street decked with bunting ...

... passing more pretty cottages ...

... lots more flowers ...
Back on the front we spotted a bit of yarn bombing by the Raleigh wall that we’d missed on our way out ...
Once back at the car we had a picnic with this as our view ... it's the spot where the River Otter meets the sea ... not too shabby at all ...

We both loved the trees on the hill ...

The picnic was a real treat with freshly cooked beetroot from a neighbour's allotment ...
... and plenty of home grown tomatoes which we'd picked before leaving home ...
Once eaten we decided to walk the other way as there seemed to be lots going on ... It was a lovely spot ... with the river estuary to our left ...

... and the sea to the right ...

It was definitely a very popular spot ... with lots of paddle boarding and canoeing going on ...

There were also a fair few larger get togethers ... making the most of it before the 'Rule of 6' kicked in on the following day I guess.

Walking on the pebbles was hard work and we were both more than ready to head back to The Old Piggery by the time we’d made it back to the car.

So that was one new place ticked off the list ... we'd both had the loveliest of days and can definitely recommend Budleigh Salterton as being worth a visit if you get the chance 😀
