Urlay Nook :: Askrigg, The Yorkshire Dales

Hi there everyone 😀

A few weeks ago it was time for our first getaway in what seemed like ages and our home for the week was Urlay Nook, a lovely looking cottage in the tiny village of Askrigg, in the very lovely Yorkshire Dales.

The pre-arrival information had been very reassuring, with lots of additional Covid safety measures in place, which made us feel very comfortable about going. We were really looking forward to our break, which was starting out with our annual weekend catch up with old work friends.

So ... let’s crack on with my first holiday cottage review for 2021 ...

When did we visit?
21-28 May 2021

How many does it sleep?

4 ... in one double and one twin bedroom

How much was it?
£695.00

Who did we book with?

We saw plenty of rain on our way up, but it stopped as we arrived. We picked the key up from the owner, just around the corner and parked up in the parking space at the front of the cottage ...

Once inside the cottage there is a small lobby area, with space to hang coats and leave muddy boots, leading through to a lovely kitchen ...

It was light and airy with a generous welcome pack ...
... and an envelope full of personalised welcome information ... in replacement of the traditional welcome folder ...

From the kitchen you can access the garden, which is just lovely, with a fabulous outlook over the hills. I took lots of photos of the garden and the view during our stay and these are my favourites ...

So .. back to inside the cottage ... there is a useful utility room off of the kitchen ...

Heading left from the kitchen is the dining room ...

Then the hallway and stairs and into the lounge ...

All with fabulous views out the back.

Halfway up the stairs you can see the view out front, as the cottage is on the main road through the village ...
Upstairs there are two large bedrooms ... a super-king, with a nice spacious en-suite ...

And a lovely twin ...

There is also a nice big family bathroom with a bath and separate shower.

The whole of the cottage was immaculate, tastefully decorated, with cosy soft furnishings, nice local decorative touches and spotlessly clean.

Our likes during the course of our stay ...
  • The measures taken to ensure the property was Covid safe were more than expected and made us feel really comfortable and safe ... but still like we were in a 'home from home'.
  • The situation of the cottage was perfect for us, both in the fact that it was just on the edge of the village, with a beautiful outlook, and the location of the village within The Dales.  It was very easy to get out and about and there were lots of interesting places to visit without going very far.
  • The space ... for just the two of us the cottage was very spacious. There was plenty of room and plenty of storage space, which is always useful as it's good to be able to stow all your bits and pieces away.
  • It was absolutely spotless
  • The kitchen had plenty of everything that we needed and was well set out and good for cooking in.
  • Lovely cosy and comfy beds, with lovely linen and nice big white fluffy towels.
  • Nice reliable Wifi, Sky TV & Netflix.
  • The garden was just lovely and a pleasure to sit in.
  • The view out back was stunning.
  • Even though the cottage is on the main road through the village it was very quiet and we weren't bothered by road noise at all.
Anything that could have made it better?
I was really clutching at straws to find anything that could have made this cottage better ... it is definitely one of the nicest we have stayed in ... and we have stayed in a lot of cottages 😀

Would we stay again?
Most definitely and I'm sure that we will.

Would we recommend this cottage to our family and friends?
Absolutely ... without a shadow of a doubt.

  1. That looks a super cottage. It's really nice when the owners leave little touches like a walks leaflet and that welcome pack looks fab. Although I loved our Norfolk holiday, the cottage wasn't the nicest we had stayed in. It wasn't actually the cottage we chose, as the owners sold it before our holiday. We still had a good time though. X

    1. It really was lovely ... definitely one of the nicest we’ve stayed in. There were two other lovely cottages we were due to stay in last year that the owners decided to stop letting. One was in Scotland and was absolutely stunning ... the other we replaced with this one, so that was a real winner 😃

  2. Wow, I'd love to stay there & it reminded me of the beautiful painting above my piano, that I have of Askrigg. The cottage looks superb & the patio area would definitely get a lot of use on nice days. Thanks for sharing the details, take care & hugs.

    1. So pleased to invoke good memories for you. We loved Askrigg and I have more photos to come of our walk to Mill Gill Force. The patio was a real delight ... I could have sat there in the sun for hours just looking at the fields and listening to the babbling Brook which flowed across the back. X

Thanks for taking time to comment on my blog. I love to hear what people think about what Martin and I have been up to.
