Remember a few weeks ago I showed you my very tall sunflowers … sadly lacking on the flower front?
Well I thought I’d give you a quick update.
I took these photos about a week ago … still getting taller …
… and looking like a flower may be imminent …
I took these a few days later …
Yay … tiny little flower on a very tall stalk … I was expecting at least dinner plate size. Maybe it will get bigger … I will let you know.
Very strangely too, even though all of the seeds we planted were from the same packet … some seem to have lots of side shoots and some have none … So I’m hoping for flowers all the way up the stem.

I did have a few worrying moments when the wind picked up but luckily we had not got round to chopping up a huge thin branch that we’d chopped off one of the trees … it’s made a great stake …
The flower does seem to be getting, very gradually, a bit bigger and this is my latest photo taken in the evening sunshine over the weekend …
It still is the only flower we have though. I am hopeful there may be a few more … I will keep you posted π»π»π»

I have grown a short(er) sunflower this year, they are multi-headed and producing loads of flowers. They must be 10 foot; I have to jump to pick them. Yours are whoppers! Hoping they produce more flowers. CN x
ReplyDeleteIt’s looking promising … there is another flower starting to bloom today … I will need ladders to pick mine πππ
DeleteChuckle - for as long as there is no flower - the plant grows taller - which is ideal for a sunflower growing competition, not all have side shoot flowers, some are more prone to having multi-heads than others but it is all good fun with sunflowers - they are such 'uplifting' flowersπ»π»
ReplyDeleteThese have certainly kept us entertained this year. I don’t know why these two are so tall … we have others nowhere as tall … I guess it’s just the location they are in the garden. The tallest is the only with a flower actually in flower and I’ve noticed today there is a second one just starting to turn yellow π»π»π»
DeleteI will have to sort out some sunflowers for next year. They are such beautiful flowers....when they actually flower. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are quite a few more come out today … I’ve taken another load of photos … I do think it’s a bit of a lottery with regards to what you end up with. We planted loads and it’s only two that have grown so tall … the others are a bit more spindly and quite short π
